A Brief History of the Gallery

The Les Malamut Art Gallery, incorporated as the Wheelchair Gallery Inc., was the creation of a group of citizens who wished to provide access to original works of art to all residents of Union Township. The group raised money through grants and donations to install an elevator providing access to the lower level of the Public Library; the Library Trustees provided space and agreed to the formation of a Gallery Committee that would have responsibility for all artistic activities. The Library has provided the physical facility and supported the Gallery since 1988.

The Gallery opened in March 1988 as the Wheelchair Art Gallery. When an exhibit opens, the Gallery committee hosts a reception. Each year six to eight exhibits are mounted and have included various media. Prospective artists are invited to submit slides or samples of their work to members of the Gallery Committee. This is usually done during an opening reception.

______________

Members of the Gallery Committee are volunteers; some are artists, others are interested members of the community. The Library Director serves as liaison to the Library Board of Trustees. There is no paid staff. New Board members and volunteers are being actively sought to assist in and extend the outreach of the Gallery.

The Gallery is open during Library hours. Artists interested in exhibiting work and individuals desiring to become board members or just volunteering their services, can contact Barbara Wirkus dmbbw33@yahoo.com for information.
